Netflix’s Something Very Bad Is About to Happen takes a shocking twist – but what’s the big reveal?
Before the show premiered on Thursday, March 26, Netflix teased it as a service centered around an engaged couple who broke up.
“Rachel and Nicky got engaged last week,” read the caption. Before they can tie the knot, something terrible happens that disturbs them.
Something Very Bad Is About to Happen stars Camila Morrone, Adam DiMarco, Gus Birney, Karla Crome again Sawyer Fraser. Jeff Wilbusch, Ted Levine again Jennifer Jason Leigh make all the other characters close Victoria Pedretti, Josh Hamilton again Logan Miller.
It takes half a season for Rachel (Morrone) to discover that her family is cursed. She’s supposed to marry her sweetheart at sunset on her wedding day but if Nicky (DiMarco) isn’t The One, she’s going to die. If so, she will live – or, if she chooses not to go through with the marriage, she will die and the curse will pass on to Nicky and her family.
Witness (Zlatko Buric) is an immortal being who tries to warn Rachel after she leaves her wife at the altar and curses herself. Rachel finally tries to say “I do” to Nicky but she changes her mind. He agrees to the marriage – but then backs out at the last minute.
In the last series, Nicky’s family members started bleeding as a result. Rachel is also bleeding because she doesn’t believe in herself and Nicky – who survives because she knows that Rachel is her soulmate.
Rachel goes out to die, without a shocking twist, instead she trades places with the Witnesses and is now in charge of monitoring Nicky’s family to make sure they marry their soul mates – or else.
“There’s a difference between having a lot of love and someone being your person,” Morrone, 28, told Tudum this month about the ending. “Rachel’s person could understand her wholeheartedly, believe her emotional tendencies and doubts, and hold her space. … Nicky loves her and wants her, but she really doesn’t understand.”
Creator Haley Z. Boston and broke the ending.
“That [ending] the scene is one of my favorite scenes in the whole show,” said Boston. “I remember thinking, ‘How do I close these characters?’ The show is about breaking up, ultimately. After you break up, it’s time to work. … At this point, Rachel is tired, and she’s trying to get out of there. It was like a good ending for them.”
He concluded: “Finally, I fell in love with this idea of death and rebirth, and in order to find rebirth, it was natural that there was a mythical answer. [Rachel] he has a curse, so he doesn’t leave the wall, he should be careful if he ever wants to marry and who he chooses.”
