Rivian and Uber announce $1.25B robotaxi partnership across 25 cities

Rivian and Uber On Thursday he announced a partnership of up to $1.25 billion to accelerate the two companies’ autonomous vehicle plans and deploy up to 50,000 autonomous robots in the coming years.
Under the agreement, Uber will invest up to $1.25 billion in Rivian through 2031, subject to achieving the milestone of operating independently on certain dates.
The two companies have agreed to an initial investment of $300 million following the signing of the agreement, subject to regulatory approval.
Uber plans to buy, directly or through its fleet partners, 10,000 fully autonomous Rivian R2 The robotaxis and ride-hailing service firm will have the option to buy up to 40,000 more by 2030. Rivian’s autonomous R2 robotic aircraft will be available exclusively through the Uber platform.

Companies are planning to start the first shipment of robotaxis San Francisco and Miami in 2028, before expanding to more than a dozen cities in 2031.
If all the autonomous performance milestones are achieved, Rivian and Uber will have released thousands unsupervised robotaxis in all 25 cities in the US, Canada and Europe by the end of 2031.

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said the company “strongly believes in Rivian’s approach – designing the vehicle, computing platform, and software stacks together while maintaining ultimate control from end to end. production and give to the US”

Rivian shares rose 3.8% on Thursday, while Uber shares fell 1.72% during the day’s trading session.
