Newsom faced ‘falling into the trap’ of attacking Democrats

Comedian Adam Friedland clashed with Gov. Gavin Newsom, D-Calif., over the governor announcing the Democratic Party’s fix on “pronouns” and other cultural issues.

While appearing on “The Adam Friedland Show” to promote his new book “The Fast Guy” on Wednesday, Newsom faced several criticisms from Friedland — including his recent claim that Democrats are culturally “normal.”

“From an intellectual point of view, from the beginning of politics, there is no doubt that the Democratic Party needs to be, I would say, culturally normal. I believe that – a little tendency to spend too much time on pronouns, identity, politics, to focus too much on tabletop issues, the things that really matter, the accumulation of debt and the costs of health care and child care easily. I got caught up in that, that I was a victim of that,” Newsom said last month on CNN.

Friedland confronted Newsom about those comments on his show,

“He said the Democratic Party is too focused on pronouns,” he said. “Like you fall into their trap. That’s what they say. No voter has decided like ‘I’m going to go Democrat, but their fix of pronouns is like … no.’

Newsom said, “I think it’s been there for a while… I think it’s not one thing. It’s an accumulation of things. I’m just telling you, like the old-school Democrats that I’ve talked to…”

Friedland reiterated that Newsom is “walking into a trap.”

“There are, like, three trans players. People are like ‘I’d vote for Democrats if they weren’t the ones ruining the integrity of girls’ sports’? Like, come on, dude. You’re falling into a trap,” Friedland said.

Newsom repeatedly responded, “I understand” when pressed by Friedland but added that Republicans were winning the message war on cultural issues.

“They were all over the place. We were on our heels, not our toes. And the stories, and we were always on defense,” Newsom said.

Both Friedland and Newsom agreed that people need to “Mind your own f—ing business” rather than harping on cultural issues.

Commenting on Fox News Digital, a spokesperson for Newsom said the governor’s comments “speak for themselves.”

Newsom was blasted by left-leaning podcaster Jennifer Welch last week for “putting down” on Republicans on cultural issues.

“What you’re saying, Gov. Newsom, is incredibly dangerous,” Welch said. “And you’re abandoning the narrative that Republicans are trying to define for free people who think their business stands for everything. You’re letting their b—— narrative define the American people, and it’s absolutely disgraceful.”

Newsom responded to Welch’s comments Monday while appearing on Kara Swisher’s podcast, saying she was referring more to how people feel about certain issues than trying to define what is “culturally normal.”

“It’s what you, what you emphasize, what you focus on the wrong way and how you navigate the world where they’re trying to make a change, and we’re on the defensive,” Newsom said. “And, that’s why I went ahead with the case as it relates to the ban and the cultural cleansing that’s being done by the right group. And that’s why we’re repeating that.”
