Mary-Margaret Humes Continues the Tradition of James Van Der Beek with Children

Dawson’s Creek star Mary-Margaret Humes continues to honor the tradition with his on-screen son, James Van Der Beekone month after his death.
James’ wife, Kimberly Van Der Beektook to his Instagram Story on Sunday, March 8, to honor memories with the late actor on what would have been his 49th birthday – and to share new moments with the couple’s six children. In the clip, the children gathered around an outdoor table as they looked at the gift Humes gave them.
“Who do you think sent this?” Kimberly asked, and the children answered in unison, “Mary Margaret.” After Kimberly asked what was inside the box, the kids exclaimed, “Cookies!”
“And we always get them on Dad’s birthday,” Kimberly explained, while one of the children said, “Don’t stop sending these.”
Before removing the box, the children read a letter written by Humes, which said, “The way to say goodbye is for those who love with their eyes. For those who love with their heart and soul, there is no separation. Happy birthday kiddo. I love you.”
Humes, for her part, reposted the video and added two hearts, alongside the caption, “Forever Family.” Humes also paid tribute to James via Instagram on Sunday, sharing a collage of throwback photos with her on-screen son and his family.
“You are never more than an imagination,” Humes wrote. “Happy Birthday James … #familyfirst #foreverfriends @vanderkimberly ❤️.”
In February news broke that James had died after a battle with stage 3 colorectal cancer. He was 48 years old.
“Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace,” a statement on the actor’s Instagram read at the time. “There is much we can discuss about his wishes, love for humanity and the sanctity of time. Those days will come. For now we ask that we be alone and in peace as we mourn our loving husband, father, son, brother and friend.”
Humes, meanwhile, paid tribute to James by sharing a selfie of the two and a throwback photo.
“It’s not often that I’m lost for words … today would be different. James, my kind hero, fought a hard battle against all odds with quiet strength and dignity,” Humes wrote on Instagram at the time. “I will always love you and I love you for that. Our last conversations … a few days ago … are always soft in my heart for safe keeping. To our family of friends at Dawson’s Creek, please respect our peace for now as Beautiful Kimberly and family have asked for a peaceful privacy for now.”
