Lionel Richie warns budding players to embrace fans after Chappell Roan’s bizarre incident

Lionel Richie knows the celebrity game can be challenging, and has issued a warning to rising celebrities after Chappell Roan faced backlash following a negative fan encounter.
While hanging out with her son-in-law, Joel Madden, the Good Charlotte frontman admitted that he had never heard his father-in-law complain about fans approaching him in public.
“I used to be invisible,” explained Richie, before admitting that he had trouble ignoring fans. “There’s something they want to say to you. And you can see it on their faces. There’s something they want to say. And if I ignore them, it would be worse.”

He added, “Sometimes you meet someone you really admire, and you’re sorry you met them.”
The “All Night Long” singer said, “I made a promise to myself – I won’t be that. I won’t.”
Richie realized that stardom is not for everyone.
“Something that often happens is that, when people enter the business, I tell them that there is something you haven’t calculated,” he said. “I hope you love people.
“Because if you don’t like people, this is what will be felt. You spend the first half of your career saying, ‘Look at me, look at me, look at me, look at me.’ And finally you become famous. ‘Don’t look at me. Don’t look at me. Don’t look at me.’
He continued, “The universe has given you what you asked for. Now what about people you don’t like, or do you want to be famous and rich without people? It doesn’t work like that. You have to be able to get involved.”
I was in town last week to perform at Lollapalooza Brazilthe “Pink Pony Club” singer allegedly directed security to yell at his daughter after seeing Chappell having breakfast at a hotel in São Paulo, according to professional soccer star Jorginho Frello.

Chappell, 28, spoke about the incident on Instagram stories and later denied the fan gathering after the “very offensive” situation caught the eye of Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere.
In a statement shared with X, Cavaliere said Chappell is no longer welcome to him do in his home.
“I mean as long as I’m in charge of our city — this young lady @ChappellRoan will never perform at Todo Mundo No Rio,” he wrote in a statement translated from Portuguese. I doubt that Shakira i will do that! By the way, @FrelloJorginho, your child is already an honored guest of the organization in May!”
Say “Good Luck, Babe!” The singer took to social media on Sunday morning to tell her “side of the story” while lying in bed.
“I didn’t see. I didn’t even see a woman and a child. No one came to me. No one bothered me,” the singer revealed to his fans while lying in bed. “I was just having breakfast at my hotel, I think these people were staying at the hotel.”
“I didn’t ask the security guard to go up and talk to the mother and the child, they didn’t come to me. They weren’t doing anything.”

He continued, “I don’t hate people who are fans of my music. I don’t hate children. That’s crazy.”
“I’m sorry, mother and child, that someone took you for something, someone will do it and if you are not comfortable, that makes me very sad. It was not appropriate.”
Jorginho, a midfielder for Campeonato Brasileiro Série A club Flamengo, tweeted news that his family had gone through a “very upsetting situation” involving Chappell before his set at Lollapalooza in Brazil.

He revealed that his 11-year-old daughter was accused by Chappell’s security personnel of checking on the singer.
“The worst thing is that he didn’t even come close to her,” he wrote. “He just passed by the musician’s table, he checked that it was him, he smiled, he went back to live with his mother. He didn’t say anything, he didn’t ask anything.”

Jorghino wrote that after his daughter passed, “The senior security guard came to their table while they were having breakfast and started talking in a cruel way to my wife and daughter, saying that he should not allow my daughter to ‘disrespect’ or ‘hurt’ other people.”

He continued, “It’s sad to see this kind of treatment from those who should understand the importance of the fans. In the end, they are the ones who created all of this. I sincerely hope this will be a moment of reflection. No one should have to go through this, especially not a child.”
