Actress Dree Hemingway on Sunday expressed her admiration and sympathy for the real Daryl Hannah, who she plays in the series “Love Story”, after Hannah criticized the way she was portrayed on the show.
The FX limited series “Love Story” dramatizes the 1990s romance between John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette before their deaths in 1999. The show features the couple’s relationship alongside Kennedy’s former romance with actress Hannah, who he dated and dated for years before he met Bestette.
Hannah, however, insisted that the version of herself portrayed in the series is “not even a remotely accurate representation” of her life or her relationship with Kennedy, calling the behavior portrayed “not true.”

“In the weeks since the series aired, I have received many hostile and threatening messages from viewers who seem to believe the show is real,” Hannah wrote in a New York Times piece. “When entertainment borrows a real person’s name, it can forever affect their reputation.”
At Vanity Fair’s Oscars event on Sunday in Los Angeles, Hemingway was asked about his thoughts on a blistering article criticizing the show and its portrayal of him.
“I mean, I respect her and really – it’s a serious thing to play a person, a real person,” Hemingway said of playing Hannah. “I mean, I can only talk to him as an actor, but I love him. I love him.”
Entertainment news outlet The Wrap summarized that the series “deliberately positions Hannah as the budding romantic between JFK Jr. (Paul Anthony Kelly) and Carolyn Bessette (Sarah Pidgeon).”
The article added that “In doing so, the FX series shows scenes in which the ‘Splash’ and ‘Kill Bill’ star not only invites friends of a questionable character to his house with Kennedy, but also crashes a memorial service for Kennedy’s late mother, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis (Naomi Watts).”

Critics of the show have been open about the way it portrays events that affect real people.
“The ‘Love Story’ portrayal of Hannah as a whiny, coke-obsessed prima donna is not true,” an opinion piece published by Vogue read. “Of course, if I were Hana, I would consider suing.”

New York congressional candidate and grandson of President John F. KennedyJack Schlossberg, has also criticized the series and the producer.
“Well, if you want to know someone who’s never met anyone in my family, who doesn’t know anything about us, talk to Ryan Murphy. I just want people who will know do watch the show to watch it with one letter in mind, and that’s the capital F of fiction,” Schlossberg told CBS News’ Mo Rocca.

“This guy knows nothing about what he’s talking about, and he’s making a lot of money showing off someone else’s life,” Schlossberg continued. “I would hope that Mr. Murphy would donate some of the millions of dollars in profits that he makes to maybe some of the causes that John fought for his whole life – justice, maybe he would donate some of that money to the JFK Library to help keep the memory of President Kennedy alive. But it’s not, he’s making money. This is not a documentary, and I’m going to leave it.”
