CNN anchor Abby Phillip drew on-air reprimand Wednesday night for her comments about last weekend’s ISIS-inspired terrorist attack in New York City after she shared the news on social media earlier in the day.

“This morning I issued a correction first thing in the morning on X for a mistake I made on last night’s show, but I wanted to do that on the radio as well,” Phillip told viewers. “I falsely stated that the bombs thrown by suspected ISIS-inspired terrorists in New York over the weekend were aimed at Mayor Mamdani. This is not the case. I failed to catch and correct that mistake in real time and I take full responsibility for that.”

“And even though we make mistakes, it’s important to admit and correct those mistakes when they happen,” added Phillip.

Phillip issued an apology to X after it went viral for falsely claiming that the attempted terrorist attack was “against” New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

Notably, during Phillip’s show Tuesday night, CNN political analyst Ana Navarro repeated that lie, which was corrected by Republican panelist Joe Borelli.

“To be clear, the attack was not directed at Mayor Mamdani,” Borelli told Navarro. “It was attacking protesters, people who were protesting against Mamdani. Calling it an attack on Muslims would completely undo what happened. Someone who shouted ‘Allah Akbar’ threw a bomb that didn’t go off at the protesters.”

Senior CNN reporter Edward-Isaac Dovere also said the same thing to X that Mamdani was “a victim of political violence.” Dover later removed the post and issued a correction.

“I want to correct something I originally wrote on X, which implied that Mayor Mamdani was the victim of political violence last week in the ISIS-inspired terrorist attack in New York City,” Dovere wrote.

“Law enforcement said two suspects threw explosives at an anti-Islam protest and a protest near Mayor Mamdani’s house on Saturday, but they did not say who was the target. I apologize for this mistake and have deleted the original text.”

CNN’s coverage of the attack began Tuesday when it happened expressed in a strange way terrorists suspected as youth who could have enjoyed the good weather.

“Two young Pennsylvanians landed in New York City on Saturday morning for what would have been a typical day of enjoying the city during the hot weather,” CNN’s now-deleted X said. “But in less than an hour, their lives would change dramatically as the two would be arrested for throwing homemade bombs during an anti-Muslim protest outside Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s home. Here’s what we know so far.”

The network followed suit meaning in X: “The article about the two people arrested for throwing improvised explosive devices outside the home of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani failed to reflect the gravity of the incident and thus violated the editorial standards we require in all our reporting. It has therefore been deleted.”
