The mainstream media reportedly used the term “war crime” about a dozen times in the first three weeks of the Iran conflict, but 88% of those uses were directed at the US or Israel, according to an analysis released by a US-based, Mideast-focused media watchdog.

CAMERA, the Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting and Analysis, and its director of research, David Litman, released a study on Wednesday that listed 32 uses of the word “war crime” from the BBC, CNN, NBC News, The New York Times and the Washington Post.

In his review, Litman asked readers to consider how the term “war crime” has been used in reporting on the conflict, noting that a simple internet search returns usage “almost exclusively” against the US and Israel.

“CAMERA found a total of 32 uses of the phrase “war crime” during the first three weeks of the war (Feb. 28 – Mar. 21). Of those, 28 (88 percent) were directed solely at the actions of the United States and/or Israel,” Litman wrote on CAMERA’s website. “Zero were directed at the actions of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Four (12 percent) were not targeted or directed by either side.”

CAMERA has found almost all the clues from an air strike earlier in the conflict that allegedly destroyed a school in Minab, Iran. The Pentagon continues to investigate the incident, according to CAMERA.

“Many other allegations point to the sinking of an Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean that could be considered a legitimate attack,” Litman wrote.

The analysis also compared those uses to events that were not labeled “war crimes” in CAMERA’s findings.

The group cited Iranian bombs, many of which hit Israeli settlements and elsewhere.

“Although cluster munitions are not banned worldwide, using them to target populated areas is almost a war crime,” the analysis said.

CAMERA also pointed to Iranian strikes that have crippled power and other important installations in countries not officially involved in the conflict, such as Kuwait and Bahrain.

The analysis found that among the general media examined, the word “war crime” was not used in these strikes, and if Iran was mentioned in the discussion of war crimes, it was accompanied by equal criticism from the West.

“This journalistic misconduct distorts the truth,” Litman wrote.

George Mason law professor Adam Mossoff commented on this analysis, writing in X that “an analysis of the data confirms a large bias in favor of the pro-Islamic regime of Iran by the BBC, CNN, NBC and the NY Times.”

“These media organizations use ‘war crimes’ 32 times in news reports in the first 3 weeks of the US/Israel-Iran war. There are no references to the crimes of the Islamic State, and 88% of the news sources refer only to the US or Israel.”

Iranians burn the flags of the United States and Israel as they gather to remember those who were killed on board the warship Dena, in Enghelab Square on March 17, 2026 in Tehran, Iran. The naval vessel Dena was sunk by the United States in the Indian Ocean on March 4, 2026, resulting in the death of 84 Iranians. “The Islamic State is using cluster bombs against Israeli civilians, firing missiles and suicide bombers at civilian targets in many Arab countries that are not involved in the war, firing missiles at holy sites in Old Jerusalem, [but] Zero identification of these war crimes as independent crimes by major Western media organizations. This is a shame.”

Fox News Digital reached out to communications officials at CNN, the BBC, the Washington Post, The New York Times and NBC News for comment, but they did not respond by deadline.
