Rory McIlroy you just made golf history – again. But honestly? His mother may have stolen the show.
The 36-year-old won his second green jacket at the 2026 Masters Tournament on Sunday, April 13, hitting. Scottie Scheffler in one shot. That alone is a huge deal.
He is now the fourth golfer to win back-to-back Masters, joining Jack Nicklaus (1965-1966), Nick Faldo (1989-1990) and Tiger Woods (2001–2002).
But it’s the family story behind this win that has the internet in its element.
During the final round, eagle-eyed fans spotted something special sitting next to Rory McIlroy’s mother, Rosie McIlroy.
It was an ordinary bag – and it had the inscription from last year New York Times newspaper article that announced his son’s career grand slam after his first Augusta win.

Rory McIlroy’s Mom Almost Didn’t Attend The Masters
Here’s the thing – Rory’s parents, Rosie and Gerry McIlroyit wasn’t even worth it.
They missed last year’s Masters entirely because they had just bought a house in Ireland and were busy entering the week of the tournament. Rory won anyway.
So, naturally, his parents were convinced that their absence was a lucky charm.
“They didn’t say it was a good thing,” Rory said at the 2025 Zurich Classic in New Orleans, per USA Today. “They are happy that they have something to do to take their minds off what happened at the Masters.”
Rory confirmed during the green jacket event that it took a real effort to get them to Augusta this time.
“They weren’t there last year to celebrate with us, surprisingly I had to convince them to come this year, because they thought that the reason why I won was because they weren’t there. I’m glad we showed that,” he said.

After sinking his winning putt, Rory headed to his family. First, his daughter Poppy. Then his wife, Erica Stoll. Then his parents.

“This is the second time my mother has won the Major, she was at Hoylake in 2014, so there was a section of them that didn’t want to come this year, because they didn’t come last year, maybe that was the reason. [that I won]”he said The Irish Times.
“I’m so glad they got that today. We’re all going to have a great time tonight,” he added.

“Mom and dad, I owe you everything…” he said during the green jacket ceremony, with tears in his eyes. “You two are wonderful parents, and if I can be as much of a parent to Poppy as you are to me, I know I’ve done a good job.”
During the press conference after the event, Rory revealed that he had to fight emotions while playing.
“I caught myself a few times on the golf course thinking about them, and I said ‘No, not yet, not yet’,” he said.
“It’s really nice to have them here, they were missed last year and the first thing I wanted to do was fly home to see them because obviously I wouldn’t be living up here if it wasn’t for them,” he continued.

Rory now has six major victories to his name – the 2011 US Open, 2012 and 2014 PGA Championship, 2014 Open Championship and the 2025 and 2026 Masters.
He is the 15th golfer in PGA history to win at least six majors and the second European.
But at the end of the day, it all came back to family.
“When the ball hit the bronze and I hit it from two inches or whatever I just looked behind the green because I saw my mom and dad and Erica and Poppy and I was like ‘I can’t believe I just did it again,'” he said in a press conference.
“More excitement. Not emotionally, but just, wow, it’s amazing. I can’t believe I’ve done it again,” she added.
