Spring is one of the less fun seasons to dress for – especially if you live in New York City like I do. Days start to cool and jump around 20 degrees by mid-afternoon. Not to mention that some days are met with a surprise rain shower that you didn’t plan for, and before you know it, you’re drenched in a nice spring dress. How do you dress in such bad weather? However, after living in New York City for over a decade, I have built the ultimate wardrobe for every type of spring day.
And here’s the thing: You don’t have to spend hundreds to build your spring capsule wardrobe, either. All it takes is one bright blouse to instantly lift jeans, a jacket that looks made for those sunny but chilly afternoons, and sturdy sneakers to support the extra time you’ll be spending walking around your neighborhood. You’ll look like a springtime urbanite with my recommendations below!
Spring Wardrobe Must-Haves, According to a NYC Shopping Writer
1. What I like: The timeless trench coat is my go-to wardrobe staple every spring, all because of its versatility and sleek, sophisticated aura.
2. Clean and Clean: A well put together white button down can be worn anytime, anywhere. Plus, it’s easy to layer for those chilly spring times.
3. Chill Buster: For those in between weather days, a thin sweater keeps me comfortable on chilly mornings and warm afternoons. I like the off-center buttons on this one for some added dimension.
4. Nice and Comfortable: When the temperature hits 65 degrees, every NYC girl breaks out a cute midi dress, like this gingham print with soft puff sleeves. A magnet for compliments!
5. Chic Stompers: Once I get my winter boots out, the first pair of shoes I break out are my trusty penny loafers. The sturdy upper and thick heel make them supportive for long walks around town, yet they don’t skimp on style.
6. Light Blouse: I tend to wear more color when spring rolls around, so I always keep a bright floral blouse in my closet. The tie-neck design adds visual interest without feeling awkward.
7. Sporty Look: A relatively new addition to my spring wardrobe, now I can’t live without a cool and casual rugby shirt on casual days.
8. Eternal denim: My light wash jeans get their shining moment every spring. I find that relaxed denim flatters every body type, too, so go ahead, grab a few different washes!
9. Layering Must Haves: A plain t-shirt may seem basic, but it’s roomy – especially if it’s made from 100% organic cotton, like this Quince selection. Wear it alone with jeans or layer it under a light sweater or coat.
10. Old Sum: Every outfit I own can be completed with a classic denim jacket. The real underdog of spring wardrobes!
11. Daily kicks: Spring means more time for walking around town, which calls for trendy walking shoes, like these white colorblock sneakers.
12. Slip Right In: As soon as the snow melts, I look forward to wearing my cute ballet flats. The hooded ones are still comfortable, and I often wear them with jeans.
13. Female and Young: Spring is the perfect time to wear a skirt in NYC. You will see a lot of girls wearing foam skirts while brunching outside.
