The Iranian-backed Houthi terrorist organization has not entered the conflict on the Iranian side, but in recent days it has been consolidating its support for Tehran, and its leader, Abdul Malik al-Houthi, has announced that he is ready to go to war against the US and Israel if necessary.
“Regarding military escalation and action, our fingers are busy, ready to respond whenever they agree,” al-Houthi said on Thursday.
“The reason why the Houthis are not intervening is that they are the last line of resistance against the axis. Especially after some members of the axis have been taken down,” Nadwa Al-Dawsari, a Yemen expert and fellow at the Middle East Institute, told Fox News Digital.

The official slogan of the Houthi movement (Ansar Allah) reads, “Allah is Great. Death to America. Death to Israel. Curse the Jews. Victory to Islam.”
Al-Dawsari, who has written extensively about Yemen and the Houthis, said: “I think the Houthis will intervene at some point. If the war continues for a long time, it is possible that the Houthis will intervene. I think what the Houthis want to do – and they have been biting for a long time – is to attack the Saudis.

The Islamic Republic of Iran forms an “Axis of Resistance” before the attack of Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023. Iran’s coalition of Shiite and Sunni terrorist proxies, includes Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip, the Houthis in the Shiite government in Iraq, the Shiite government Iraqi, Shiite and Baafuthi regime.
In the first few weeks of his administration, President Biden launched a reset with the Houthis and pressured the Saudis to end the war against the bellicose Houthi movement. “The war in Yemen must end,” Biden said in his first major foreign policy speech on the Mideast in February 2021.

Biden’s retreat from US support for the Saudi-led coalition in its war against the Houthis also coincided with his administration delisting the Houthis as a foreign terrorist organization. President Donald Trump immediately reversed the call of the Houthis early in his second term and launched military strikes against the terrorists in Yemen.
Al-Dawsari also said that another reason why the Houthis have not entered the conflict is that it is not in the interests of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to “drag the Houthis into a suicidal war.” He argues that “If the Iranian regime falls, and if a new regime emerges, I think the IRGC will regroup in Yemen or Somalia. Yemen is an important alliance.”

“There was a discussion between the IRGC and the Houthis about why the continued presence of the “Houthis” is so important to the IRGC,” he said.
“The IRGC cannot afford to lose the Houthis. Yemen is very important to them. They need to save the Houthis tomorrow so that the IRGC can continue even after the regime,” Al-Dawsari continued.

He noted that “the Houthis are based in the Horn of Africa. The IRGC is following the Houthis. The intervention may be symbolic of the Houthis.” He went on to say that “Iran’s strategy now is to expand the war and spread it throughout the region and to put pressure on the US.”
In May 2025, Trump announced that the US would suspend its aerial bombing campaign against the Houthis because, he said, the Houthis “don’t want to fight.”
“They just don’t want to, and we’re going to respect that. We’re going to stop the bombing,” Trump said. The Houthis began attacking commercial shipping in the Red Sea, as well as the Jewish state, to support their ally Hamas in Gaza.

Al-Dawsari said that after Trump’s announcement, the Houthis did not attack American ships. “They know that Trump is not kidding. They know that they will face the consequences.”
