Met Opera Claps Back at Timothee Chalamet’s Controversial Speech

Timothée Chalamet Meeting the Metropolitan Opera, LA Opera and Royal Ballet was not on anyone’s 2026 bingo card.
Chalamet, 30, raised eyebrows after making an inappropriate comment about the artist community during an on-stage interview. Varietywhich was published last month.
“Some people want instant gratification. I’m in the middle,” Chalamet explained Matthew McConaughey while discussing condensed attention spans. “Because I love people [saying]’Hey, we have to keep the movie theaters alive. We have to keep this species alive.’”
Chalamet commented, “I don’t want to work in ballet or opera where it’s like, ‘Hey, keep this thing alive, even though nobody cares anymore.’
I Marty Supreme The actor quickly added, “All respect to the ballet and opera people out there,” before appearing to admit his mistake.
“Damn, I just shot for no reason,” Chalamet, his mother, Nicole Flendershe was a professional dancer and ballet dancer from New York City, she admitted.
The Met Opera was among the institutions that applauded Chalamet’s words. The organization posted a video on Instagram on Thursday, March 5, highlighting all the musicians, designers, staff and media people who work at the opera.
“All respect to the opera (and ballet) people out there,” the Met Opera captioned the video, adding, “This is yours, @tchalamet… 👀” in the caption.
The clapback video received support from the Broadway community, actors, Dancing with the Stars more beauties and celebrities.
“He’ll be singing a different song when live art takes over after the AI takes over. Oh wait. He’s more than just singing,” the Tony winner Laura Benati he wrote in the comment section.
Jordan Fisher again Sarah Hyland both shared clapping emojis in support of the post as they did DWTS‘ Sharna Burgess.
The Los Angeles Opera addressed Chalamet’s comments with humor as well, posting a photo from the opera. Akhnatencurrently lives in the city.
“Sorry, @tchalamet. We can give you free tickets to Akhnatenbut it sells. A few seats left to buy if you hurry,” read the post on Wednesday, March 4.
The UK’s Royal Ballet shared its video honoring its dancers, writing, “We care,” with a red heart emoji in the clip.
“Every night at the Royal Opera House, thousands of people gather to experience ballet and opera. For music. For storytelling. For the absolute magic of live performance,” they said in a caption uploaded on Friday, March 6. “If you’d like to reconsider, @tchalamet, our doors are open.
Jamie Lee Curtis showed his support for the arts by reposting a video on his Instagram Story that asked, “Why do artists photograph other artists?”
Megan Fairchildprincipal dancer of the New York City Ballet, responded to Chalamet’s comments with an Instagram video.
“Timmy, I didn’t know you were a world-class dancer or opera singer, who just chose not to pursue it because acting is so popular,” Fairchild joked. “Ballet and opera are not hobbies that people choose to gain fame.”
He added in his caption, “Good luck in the Oscar race. Supporting singers are important. None of this is easy, and there’s no need to put down ballet or opera.”
