David Wain’s film and television projects are an acquired taste. Wain gained recognition as part of a sketch comedy group The state. The state the cast includes the likes of Michael Ian Black, Kerri Kenney, Thomas Lennon, Joe Lo Truglio, Michael Showalter, and Ken Marino. Wain will continue to develop the comedy TV series Stella and Michael Ian Black and Michael Showalter, arguably his best work. He has also been a film director for the past 25 years, and his work includes Hot Wet American Summer, Examples, Wanderlustagain A Futile and Stupid Action.
Wain used cast members from The state and repeating his film projects in everything he did, too Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass that tradition continues. Wain’s new film follows Gail Daughtry (Zoey Deutch) as she becomes engaged to Tom (Michael Cassidy). Gail is a hairdresser who works with her best friend Otto (Miles Gutierrez-Riley) at a salon.
After Otto brings up the idea of people getting a pass to have sex with their celebrities, Gail is discussing it with Tom as they are about to sign Jennifer Aniston’s cookbook when Gail catches Tom having sex with Aniston. Now Gail tags along with Otto in Los Angeles as she attends a hair convention where she intends to have sex with Jon Hamm to save her marriage.
David Wain Dialed Down
With David Wain’s comedy, expect silliness, extreme profanity, and fun moments. But Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass not enough of anything to be worthwhile or memorable other than a cameo fest, no character development, and a hopelessly predictable and very dull ending.
According to IMDb, Wain and Marino (who co-wrote Gail Daughtry together) came to the same conclusion that the basis for the passing of sex celebrities was “a really stupid idea” that was “absurd and pointless.” That’s what they base the film around; the initial sense of stupidity and purposelessness. It’s no surprise that this film lacks luster as it is.
Without appearances or fully supporting character roles The state alumni Joe Lo Truglio, Ken Marino, Thomas Lennon, Kerri Kenney, and Michael Ian Black, Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass It also has cameos from Jennifer Aniston, Jon Hamm, John Slattery, Henry Winkler, Richard Kind, “Weird Al” Yankovic, Elizabeth Banks, and Elizabeth Perkins. Penn Jillette and Paul Rudd also appear but have no lines at all.
A Setup You’ve Seen Before
The film revives the story line of Dumb and Dumber until Gail mixes her bag with a mob/gang (never specified) while going to another state to fulfill her desire for sex. That’s funny Gail Daughtry it reminds us Dumb and Dumber as the film is also very similar Hall Passanother Farrelly Brothers movie.
There are a few gags and lines of dialogue that are a little funny. Ken Marino’s comment that he has to sell his hair to buy wigs and eventually turns around to sell his wigs to get hair is ridiculous. Gail getting $0.79 on a credit card in California is bad behavior, and John Slattery getting kicked in the balls and throwing up uncontrollably was unexpected. Someone nearly drowned in minestrone soup while exploring Los Angeles for the first time apparently including buying gum at 7-Eleven and getting fellatio by the dumpster behind the Foot Locker.
The story never goes beyond “get to Los Angeles and try to hit Jon Hamm.” Coming to California means celebrities can pop in without a rhyme or reason and quickly disappear before moving on to the next cameo. Gail Daughtry tries to present a second story about government espionage, but is brought down by John Slattery’s stupid behavior of having his foot slammed in the door for 45 seconds straight.
That’s not it Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass it’s a formulaic, completely nonsensical film. Friends who come and cause mental damage beyond what is called entertainment. This is the cinematic equivalent of mixing ammonia and bleach and pouring it into your eyes and ears for an hour and a half. You feel so bored after watching it as if it’s your IQ score you’ll never be able to recover from.
