Kaley Cuoco Cried While Filming Big Bang Theory Breakup Scene

Kaley Cuoco had an emotional reaction to the recording of the breakup scene The Big Bang Theory weeks after him and costar Johnny Galecki separation in real life.

During the Monday, June 29, episode of “The Official Big Bang Theory Podcast,” the director Anthony Rich recalled his first day on set which happened while filming the end of season 3. Rich, now 58, directed the episode “Spaghetti Catalyst” that followed the breakup between Penny and Leonard, played by Cuoco and Galecki, respectively. The actor’s breakup happened shortly after the actors called it quits.

“A lot happened that week,” Rich joked, explaining that Cuoco and Galecki dated for “about two years” and broke up “four to six weeks before.”

The host Jessica Radloff he added that Cuoco and Galecki handled the change in their lives “well” as it was a “really difficult” situation.

“So now their characters are splitting up, and this hits close to home,” she said.

Rich recalled that while filming the scenes after Penny and Leonard’s breakup, both Cuoco and Galecki felt that the script “didn’t really take into account the demise of the relationship.” Rich explained that the writers didn’t want to give fans a “sad breakup episode”.

“People don’t want to watch that. They come to laugh,” he said.

Rich also shared that when it came time for Galecki and Cuoco to meet in front of the cameras “it was hard for them to get through.” Rich said Cuoco “started crying” and left the stage to collect herself. When Rich went to check on her, they had a pleasant heart to heart.

After the pep talk, Cuoco returned to film with Galecki. Rich praised both Cuoco and Galecki for being “such professionals” at the time.
