The film was written and directed by Bone Tomahawk filmmaker S. Craig Zahler, and Vaughn stars alongside Don Johnson, Udo Kier, Marc Blucas, Tom Guiry, BarryFred Melamed, and Dexterby Jennifer Carpenter. To take the lead role in this film, Vaughn gained 15 pounds of lean muscle, and trained to fight for several months, which stands out in his extremely violent performance.
The layout of Brawl in Cell Block 99 centers on reformed drug dealer Bradley Thomas, who is in trouble after being laid off from his auto repair job. To make matters worse, he finds out that his wife is having an affair, which causes him to go on a violent rampage and destroy his car completely. After cracking under the pressure, Thomas returns to the high-risk, high-reward world of drug trafficking, and soon comes to enjoy the spoils of his life of crime.
Fighting Within
A year later, Thomas and his wife have settled things and are pregnant, when Thomas and his partner go on a mission that goes awry. After facing a shootout with the police, Thomas locks himself in jail, where he refuses to name any of his drug gangs in order to get a lesser sentence. As a program of Brawl in Cell Block 99 he continues, Thomas’ boss starts sending him orders to kill the mob in the prison, threatening his pregnant wife if he doesn’t do it.
In order to get closer to his target, Thomas starts fighting with several security guards, which causes him to be transferred to a high security area. As Brawl in Cell Block 99 building to a thrilling finale, the film takes many disturbing turns that will leave the audience in awe.
Arts Awards Despite Low Box Office Returns
Brawl in Cell Block 99 it received critical acclaim upon its release, resulting in a 90 percent verified score on Rotten Tomatoes. Unfortunately, the film failed to make money at the box office, taking in less than a million dollars against a production budget of around $4 million. Nevertheless, the film has won many awards in the arts, and is included in the permanent selection at the Museum of Modern Art.
The film offers Vince Vaughn’s strongest and most impressive performance to date, making it an instant classic for fans of comedies and violent crime films alike.
