In his new book “Communion,” Vice President JD Vance addressed the “childless cat women” jibe he made while running for the U.S. Senate in 2021, describing it as “one of the dumbest comments” he’s ever made, according to NBC News.

During an appearance in 2021 on “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” Vance said, “We’ve been successfully run in this country, using Democrats … by our corporate oligarchs, a bunch of childless cat women who are sad about their lives and the choices they’ve made,” and who wish to make the entire country “sad.”

He then pointed to then-Vice President Kamala Harris, then-Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and then-Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, DN.Y., declared, “The entire future of the Democrats is controlled by people who don’t have children. And how does it make sense to hand over our country to people who don’t really have a direct stake in it?”

Harris has two older stepchildren.

Buttigieg announced in an August 2021 post on X, “For a long time, Chasten and I have wanted to grow our family. We are so excited to share that we are parents! The process is far from over and we are grateful for the love, support, and respect for our privacy that we have been given. We can’t wait to share more soon.” They adopted two children.

“Chasten and I are so grateful for all the well wishes since we first shared the news that we are becoming parents. We are excited to welcome Penelope Rose and Joseph August Buttigieg into our family,” Buttigieg wrote in a September 2021 post on X.

Vance addressed his controversial comments in his new book, according to NBC News.

“One of the dumbest things I’ve ever said came when I argued that ‘childless cat women’ in the Democratic Party were bringing our country down,” Vance wrote, according to the source.

“This said it created two storms: the first when I arrived, the second years later during the political campaign,” he said. “They were nonsense words, deliberately (and successfully) provocative rather than enlightening.”

Vance won election to the US Senate in 2022 and took office in early 2023.

In 2024, then-President Donald Trump tapped Vance as his running mate. Vance became vice president in early 2025.

According to NBC News, the vice president found the speech “offensive” and noted that it “had the added effect of distracting from the real point I wanted to make, which was that our society is beginning to struggle with having children.” He pointed out that he “could have made that point more effectively, and with the benefit of showing a little love to the many Americans — some for reasons beyond their control — who don’t have children.”

“When I consider the Church’s admonition to respect the dignity of all life, this was a clear moment where I failed,” commented Vance, who is Catholic.
