Nick Saban urges Senate to pass college sports reform bill, but coaching contracts fail

The ongoing debate over whether Congress should intervene in college sports took center stage in Washington, DC, on Wednesday as Nick Saban addressed a panel of witnesses warning that the current system cannot be maintained without federal legislation.

There is no doubt that NIL and the transfer portal have created a host of challenges. Some schools are spending more than $40 million on next season’s football programs, and the constant movement of players has left athletic departments scrambling to adapt.

It’s easy to see why many schools believe they face an increasingly difficult road ahead. Obviously, this is the main reason why Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) spent hours putting together a bipartisan bill.

Of course, there were many points made on the witness stand about certain conferences (the SEC and the Big Ten) standing above others like the ACC and the Big 12 in terms of revenue from television deals.

But, there appeared to be little disconnect between those who testified Wednesday and fans who live for college sports.

Invited guests included Saban, Notre Dame AD Pete Bevacqua, Pac-12 commissioner Teresa Gould, West Virginia President Gordon Gee and Utah DE Lance Holtzclaw, all of whom testified before the Commerce Appropriations Committee.

Sen. Maria Cantwell expressed that she believes the reason why the ACC and Big 12 sent letters in support of the Protect College Sports Act focused on those conferences that do not want to be left for dead, as the Pac-12 was just a few years ago following the attacks on their teams.

“They think so [what happened to the Pac-12 is] what will happen to them next. That someone will come and rearrange the seats of those conferences, and steal the schools. “

As for the portal, Nick Saban had no problem bringing up the current situation between Ole Miss and Clemson, some on social media who think it was the former Alabama coach taking another shot at the Rebels.

“There’s nothing we can do to control fraud. You know, Clemson had a player on campus for a week, and they (Ole Miss) took him off campus and took him somewhere else,” Saban lamented.

The amount of money spent on rosters continues to be a major issue

There were also some witnesses who decided to play the hits, especially when discussing the current models of NIL and collectives who have been a strong arm of financing the rosters throughout.

Going into the hearing, we all wondered how former Alabama coach Nick Saban would handle this moment, as both the SEC and Big Ten came out against the bill Tuesday evening.

But, it didn’t take long for him to move on, though he could use Ted Cruz’s coffee mug.

“I could use a little bit of that Cuban coffee because I didn’t sleep much last night because of this hearing,” Saban said. “What are our guiding principles for the future of college athletics?”

The conversation quickly shifted to roster costs, which I don’t think the Crimson Tide will get much sympathy for.

Brendan Sorsby gambled on his team, yet the NCAA is somehow the bad guy in this case.

As Nick Saban said, the former Alabama coach insists that the current system will be the downfall of sports programs across the country.

“But that’s not the same as turning the NIL into a paid program. It’s not the same as using groups and outside organizations to create a bidding war for recruits and transfers. When the program becomes whoever raises the most money gets the best players, we’re not talking about college athletics anymore as millions of fans and I know that.”

OK, but while Nick Saban and others have been touting the current system as what they see as the legal opening of the dam, not much has been said about how much money coaches make in college athletics.

We can discuss the cost of rosters, but at the same time we see head coaches across college football making over $13 million per season for their services.

Therefore, the argument about the cost of the list can fall on deaf ears, which was seen by the reaction on social media from those who attended.

But, perhaps the most important witness of the day was Utah defensive end Lance Holtzclaw, who was asked about his thoughts on the current system, and what he thinks about the sports agents currently working within the area.

What matters is college athletics, and what’s next

No matter who is speaking on Wednesday, nothing will be more sympathetic to the fans about the issues at hand.

For more than three hours, members of the Senate Commerce Committee questioned the state of college athletics, and what could be done to fix it. At that time, we heard about how bad the NIL and the transfer portal are in the game, but we didn’t hear anything about the salaries of the coaches in all the different sports.

We have been told that the site is a terrible machine and that the agents are not helping the problem, which I understand to a certain extent, but there has been a lack of discussion about the coaches being used to get the next job or how the opening of one school can lead to another.

One of the most interesting aspects of this trial was the presence of witnesses. Lance Holtzclaw transferred to Utah after his former coach Kalen DeBoer left Washington for the Alabama job, which was vacant because a key witness retired.

So, Nick Saban and Lance Holtzclaw sitting at the same table during this hearing befits the state of college athletics.

Now, we move on to the next phase, which will have amendments introduced to the current law.

This could begin next week, and the reaction from Wednesday’s case will continue in the coming days.
