CNN’s Van Jones, former adviser to Barack Obama, defended Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., on Monday said it should not be illegal to be a moderate in the Democratic Party.
“Look, I think he’s a moderate Democrat, and that shouldn’t be illegal in this party,” Jones said during an interview on CNN’s The Source with Kaitlin Collins.
“My God, do you have to agree with 100% of 100% of the agenda in Berkeley, California to be a Democrat?” he continued. “It doesn’t make sense. We’ve always had moderate Democrats, progressive Democrats who have always had some, you know, people who don’t fit the mold.”
Politico reported Monday that some Republicans were trying to persuade Fetterman to change his party. The Democratic senator told the media in an interview that, “I am a Democrat, and I live alone.”

Fetterman has faced backlash from members of his Democratic caucus after breaking with them on certain issues, such as support for Israel and other far-left causes.
Jones said the breakup with Fetterman shows how “crazy” things have become.
“It just shows how accessible things have become, that someone who wants to stick with Israel and doesn’t want an open border somehow now has to be a Republican,” he said. “That makes absolutely no sense. I think John Fetterman would not be a better fit for the Republican Party than I am.”

Politico reported that Fetterman did not directly decline the call, saying he “got the offer,” citing a GOP official who said the senator replied, “I’m going to be a — Republican.”
Malcolm Kenyatta, vice chairman of the Democratic National Committee, criticized Fetterman in April, calling the senator “a mess.”

“Almost every day now my US Senator comes to this site to attack his own people and the many people who worked hard to elect him. Suggesting that they have ‘derangement syndrome’ in opposition to this administration. You are a mess @JohnFetterman,” said Malcolm Kenyatta in a post on X.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries also called out Fetterman for his response to the Iran war and said on CNN in April that he “knows best.”

Jones concluded, “He can’t be a Republican, and he should be able to be a Democrat and not get, you know, a bunch of crap thrown at him.”
