Cameron Young says it’s an ‘honour’ to play in front of President Trump after winning the Cadillac Championship

As the PGA Tour calendar quickly approaches another major, Scottie Scheffler continues to be the best player in the world thanks to his consistent ability to compete in nearly every tournament.

Rory McIlroy is coming off his second straight win at The Masters, a remarkable achievement on one of the tour’s toughest golf courses. After a major tournament drought, McIlroy finally got his career Grand Slam and looks set to be a threat at every major tournament going forward.

But the hottest golfer in the game right now might be Cameron Young.

Young’s run began at the Genesis Invitational, where he finished tied for seventh. Then at Bay Hill, one of the toughest courses on the calendar, he finished tied for third. He won an unofficial “5th major” at THE PLAYERS Championship a week later, before finishing tied for third at The Masters.

TRUMP SAYS PGA-LIV ‘MERGE’ WILL BE ‘GREAT THING’ AS TOUR TALKS CONTINUE

A few weeks later, at the signature event at Trump National Doral’s dreaded “Blue Monster” course, Young on Sunday completed a six-shot victory. His second win of the season, a $3.6 million purse, -19 to Scheffler’s -13. And to top it off, President Trump was there to see it happen.

Cameron Young Talks Victory Before President Trump

With the president present, security and tournament procedures were very different from a normal Sunday. He was asked about it after the tournament news conference.

“Once you’re out there … you’re out there doing your job, but everything leading up to that, you know, the place is obviously crawling with Secret Service and security and police, and it has a different feel,” Young said. “I walked out and went down the side door where we’d been going into the clubhouse all week and it was like two guys got together and said, ‘Hey, we’re not letting anybody through this way right now.’ So, I was just walking straight into the locker room toward the cafeteria and I had to turn around and walk all the way around the clubhouse to get back to that door. So, there’s little things like that that are obviously different for the President here, and it changed the rhythm of the day a little bit to start, but it was already taken out of the delay so that, you know, it didn’t matter too much.”

He also spoke to President Trump after the round, thanking him for hosting the tournament.

“He was very complimentary, the way he – you know, I’ve been lucky enough to meet him before, and that’s especially for us golfers, it’s something he loves and I think he really appreciates how good everyone is on the PGA Tour,” he said. “So it’s very relevant, and I, too, thanked him for holding us and that was about it.”

When asked about the short meeting with Trump, Young said he was “thankful” that they held the tournament there and that it was “an honor” to play with the president watching.

“It’s very different,” Young added. “He’s nothing if not a very interesting man. He’s very powerful, and it’s an honor to get to play in front of him. I’m so grateful to him and his family and his organization for having these great facilities and allowing us to come and play major golf tournaments in them. This is a special place and a championship golf course, I’m so grateful to bring it back to the program.”

It’s always refreshing in this day and age to hear an athlete talk about meeting the president with respect and gratitude, instead of taking the opportunity to make a political point. Especially when that president has an appreciation for their sport, as Trump apparently does with golf.
