Grey’s Anatomy Fires Kwan Before Finale, Teases Owen’s Death

Grey’s Anatomy is setting up a shocking season 22 finale where one character is fired — and another may die on screen.

On the Thursday, April 30, episode of ABC’s hit series, Kwan’s (Harry Shum Jr.) future at Gray Sloan Memorial Hospital was questioned when Richard (James Pickens Jr.noticed Miranda (Chandra Wilson) was not actually involved in secretly offering a patient an experimental treatment that was rejected by the FDA. Richard then tells Miranda to kick Kwan off the screen.

Teddy (Kim Raver), on the other hand, was secretly considering a job in Paris that would take him away from Gray Sloan Memorial Hospital. He got into a fight with Owen (Kevin McKidd) so, but the voicemail she left the next morning changed when she heard him get into a potentially fatal car accident.

The shocking changes came after news broke in March that both McKidd, 53, and Raver, 57, were leaving the show.

“Grey’s Anatomy has been a huge part of my life, both creatively and personally, and I’m so grateful for everything the show has given me over the years,” McKidd said in a statement at the time. “Playing Dr. Owen Hunt and directing the show have both shaped me tremendously, and I’ve been privileged to work with an extraordinary group of people throughout that time. I’m especially grateful to Shonda Rhimes for creating Owen, and for the encouragement she gave me as I ventured into directing.”

He continued: “As that chapter closes, I look forward to what lies ahead—creating new work, telling new stories and taking everything I’ve learned into the next phase of my career.”

Raver also broke his silence on the news.

“Playing Dr. Teddy Altman will always hold a dear and special place in my heart. Sixteen years ago, I had the incredible privilege of stepping into this role thanks to the vision of Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers,” he wrote in his statement. “Since that day, it has been a true gift to express the incredible words of Shonda and our brilliant writing team. … To the fans – your unwavering dedication and support is the reason this show stays strong. Thank you for making this my magical place and my home.”

Creator Shonda Rhimes, Meanwhile, he revealed how the season will wrap Teddy (Raver) and Owen (McKidd).

“Over the years, we’ve had the privilege of watching Owen and Teddy’s love story evolve and deepen — two characters who always seem to find their way back to each other. It’s both heartbreaking and exciting to give this couple the happy ending their story deserves,” he teased in his statement. “Kevin and Kim bring incredible talent, uniqueness and heart to their roles as Owen and Teddy. Their contributions left an indelible mark on Grey’s Anatomy, both in front of and behind the camera. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with them both and to see them shine.”

He concluded: “While we will all miss seeing them in the halls of Gray Sloan Memorial each day, I am excited to witness where Kim and Kevin’s journey will take them in the future.”

Grey’s Anatomy airs on ABC on Thursdays at 10 pm ET before airing the next day on Hulu.
