61 percent of Canadians disapprove of US military action in Iran: poll – National

A new Ipsos poll conducted for Global News reveals 61 percent of Canadians disapprove of US military action against Iran.

Only one in four (23 per cent) Canadians approve (eight per cent strongly approve, 15 per cent somewhat agree), while 16 per cent are not sure either way.

42 percent were found to not accept them at all, while 19 percent did not accept them.

The poll also shows concern about Canada’s possible involvement, with 66 percent “expressing fear that Canada will enter the war and the lives of our soldiers will be at risk.”

Thirty-two percent think the war in Iran will end in a few months, while 41 percent disagree and 28 percent are not sure either way.

Fifty-four percent of Canadians support “using diplomacy with the US, Israel, Iran, and other countries to try to de-escalate the situation,” and 51 percent oppose “providing military support to help the US in its fight against Iran.”

How do Canadians view Carney’s handling of the Iran war?

41 percent of Canadians believe Carney is doing a “good job” in handling the war, while 22 percent say he’s doing a “bad job.” Twenty-five percent remained neutral.

Prime Minister Mark Carney told reporters on a trip to Australia that “one can never say that people don’t participate,” regarding the growing conflict in the Middle East.

The Conservatives called for a “parliamentary debate before any kind of Canadian military deployment” the day after Carney’s comments.

“It should be up to Parliament itself to say yes or no to whether or not we’re going to bring our troops into the conflict,” Conservative defense critic James Bezan told reporters on March 5 in Ottawa.

Under Canadian law, “the decision to use the [Canadian Forces] internationally it is an exercise of the prerogative of the crown. There is no law that prohibits management in this area.”


That means that Canadian military deployments are ultimately decisions made by the prime minister and cabinet of the day.

Also, 64 percent of Canadians say U.S. President Donald Trump has done a “bad job,” while only 14 percent approve of his performance.

In addition, six in 10 (59 percent) of Canadians say Trump is “very willing to use the military to advance US interests.”

Eight out of 10 Canadians are concerned about the economic impact of war

47 percent of Canadians were found to be “very concerned” about the Canadian economy and the impact of war with Iran.

The survey also found that Canadians are “very concerned” about the price of gas (53 per cent) and the price of crude oil (42 per cent).

Only 4 percent of Canadians surveyed were found to be “not at all concerned” about the Canadian economy, with 7 percent also being “not at all concerned” about gas and crude oil prices.
