A 20-year-old McDonald’s worker in Northern California is facing multiple surgeries after a co-worker threw hot cooking oil at her, leaving her with severe burns over a quarter of her body, according to her mother.
Jacob Smith was working as a shift manager at McDonald’s in Yuba City when the shocking attack happened, his mother, Amber Smith, wrote in a GoFundMe post to raise money for her son’s medical expenses.
“He was in the office preparing to count the money when he saw something out of the corner of his eye, he turned around, and oil was thrown at him,” he told KCRA.
Jacob suffered “severe second-degree burns” to about 22% of his body — including his face, neck, right arm and back — and was admitted to the intensive care unit, where his pain was so severe that doctors had limited options for additional medication, according to his mother.

“The pain he’s in is so bad that they can’t give him pain medication outside of the ICU,” he told the outlet.

The police identified the suspect as Jalani Bluett, 23, who was working with him at McDonald’s and who allegedly left the restaurant before the police arrived. Authorities later located and arrested Bluett after seeking the public’s help in locating him.
At the time of Bluett’s search, the County Sheriff’s Office said he was “at risk due to his diagnosis and vulnerability.”

When Bluett was on trial, Lt. Michael Bullard of the Yuba Police Department told KXTV that the suspect was arrested on charges including assault with a deadly weapon, harassment and aggravated assault resulting in great bodily harm. He is being held in Sutter County without bail.
Amber Smith said her son is scheduled to undergo skin graft surgery because some of the burns are too deep.

“As much as I want to be bored, or I want to hate people and fear people, it’s just difficult to be there when I have many people who show my love to me,” he wrote in a message he posted on the fundraising page. “I’m not sad, and I’m not angry, and the pain doesn’t make me sad because I know it’s necessary to heal.”
He also thanked his family, friends and faith for helping him recover, writing, “I thank God for saving my eye and giving me amazing family and friends.”
